Clarkson Village is the oldest community in the City of Mississauga — founded in 1808 on a stretch of Lakeshore Road West that sits between Southdown Road and Meadow Wood Road, with Lake Ontario a short walk to the south. Long predating the amalgamation that created the modern city, Clarkson retains a distinct neighbourhood identity that separates it clearly from the suburban development that surrounds it.

The Clarkson Village BIA, established in 1988, oversees a commercial strip anchored by independent restaurants and local businesses along Lakeshore Road West — and the area has developed a reputation among Mississauga residents for some of the city’s better dining outside of Port Credit and Streetsville. Several well-regarded independent restaurants have established themselves in Clarkson specifically because the rents and character are different from the Port Credit premium, and loyal local followings have built up around them over years.

The village’s most significant natural asset is its immediate proximity to Rattray Marsh Conservation Area and Jack Darling Memorial Park — both within easy walking or cycling distance along the Waterfront Trail. This makes Clarkson Village a natural base for a half-day or full-day that combines lakeside walking and nature with a meal at one of the village restaurants before or after.

Clarkson GO Station on the Lakeshore West line sits in the village and connects to Union Station in approximately 35 minutes — making Clarkson accessible from Toronto without a car, and a practical point on the Waterfront Trail for cyclists coming from the east.

The quiet, residential character of Clarkson is both its charm and its challenge as a visitor destination — it rewards the kind of slow, unhurried exploration that Port Credit’s busier energy sometimes doesn’t allow. If you’ve exhausted Port Credit and want a less crowded stretch of lakeshore, Clarkson is the natural next stop.
