Lion’s Valley Park is the most rewarding natural area in Oakville for anyone who wants more than a waterfront stroll. Located along Sixteen Mile Creek in the town’s northwest, it combines challenging trail terrain with exceptional wildlife habitat — and hosts one of the most spectacular natural events in the GTA each autumn.
The Sixteen Mile Creek salmon run happens every September and October, when Chinook salmon migrate upstream from Lake Ontario into the creek on their annual spawning run. From the park’s viewing points above the water, the salmon are visible in sufficient numbers to make the creek look alive with movement — large fish pushing upstream through water that in summer looks too shallow to support them. It’s genuinely remarkable to watch, and it happens within Oakville’s municipal boundaries. Fishing is permitted in the creek with a valid Ontario provincial licence.
Beyond salmon season, Lion’s Valley has a well-developed trail system with route options for casual family walks and more demanding terrain with challenging hills and creek valley scrambling. Multiple trailheads access the network from different parking areas and adjacent streets. The trails connect into the Joshua’s Creek Heritage Trail (6 km) and the broader Oakville Heritage Trail system, making Lion’s Valley a hub for longer hikes through the town’s creek valley corridor.
Facilities include washrooms at the main park area, playground structures for children, and picnic facilities. The park is free to access with no admission charge year-round. On autumn weekends during peak salmon run season, the park can be busy — arriving on a weekday or early morning Saturday captures the salmon activity with significantly fewer people.
The park’s connection to the Sixteen Mile Creek Trail (8.5 km total) makes it possible to hike from Lion’s Valley to the Oakville Harbour area along the creek, emerging at the heart of Old Oakville at the lake. This route is one of the best half-day hikes in Halton Region and is almost entirely off-road through forested creek valley.
