West Edmonton Mall is the largest shopping mall in North America and for many years was the largest in the world — a scale that photographs cannot prepare visitors for and that has to be experienced on foot to be properly understood. The mall opened in 1981 and expanded in phases through the 1980s, each phase adding another attraction that seemed improbable until it was open and drawing crowds. The indoor water park — World Waterpark — has the largest indoor wave pool in the world and 17 waterslides, operating year-round regardless of Edmonton’s winters. The amusement park — Galaxyland — is a fully enclosed indoor park with rides ranging from family-appropriate to genuinely thrilling. Both operate on separate admission from the mall itself.

The retail offer spans from luxury to everyday — with Holt Renfrew and high-end boutiques at one end and Walmart at the other, covering effectively every retail category with multiple options in most. The concentration of specialty stores that wouldn’t justify locations in smaller markets makes the mall particularly worth visiting for categories where selection elsewhere is limited.

The Ice Palace is an NHL-sized rink within the mall — used for figure skating, public skating sessions, and hockey. Public skating runs most days and the rental equipment available on site makes it accessible without prior preparation. The rink’s position within the mall means arriving by the ice requires walking past an extraordinary amount of retail, which is presumably intentional.

The Fantasyland Hotel, operating within the mall building itself, offers theme rooms ranging from the moderately unusual to the genuinely surreal — a Polynesian room, a Hollywood room, an Igloo room. Staying in the hotel gives guests immediate after-hours access to the mall’s common areas and the most convenient possible access to all attractions. For families visiting Edmonton with children who have never experienced anything like West Edmonton Mall, the hotel-and-waterpark combination is a specific type of memorable family trip that is genuinely hard to replicate elsewhere.

The food court and restaurant level covers the full range — fast food, food court, casual dining, and sit-down restaurants. The Bourbon Street section of the mall is specifically designed as a restaurant district, with licensed restaurants in a streetscape setting that creates a different atmosphere from the standard food court. Marine Life is an aquarium display within the mall that includes penguins — a detail that encapsulates the West Edmonton Mall experience generally.

Practical visit notes: the mall is organized in phases that are each roughly the size of a large conventional mall, so orientation takes time on a first visit. Downloading the mall app or picking up a directory map at the entrance saves significant navigation time. The main parking structure is accessed from multiple street entrances — the 170 Street west entrance is the most direct for the main mall and hotel access. Budget a full day if you intend to do the mall, World Waterpark, and Galaxyland in combination.
