Dundurn Castle is the most architecturally impressive heritage site in Hamilton — a 40-room Regency-style castle on York Boulevard overlooking Hamilton Harbour, designated a National Historic Site and operated by the City of Hamilton as a living history museum. The castle was built between 1832 and 1835 for Sir Allan Napier MacNab, lawyer, politician, railway promoter, and eventual Premier of the Province of Canada. MacNab was one of the most influential figures in 19th-century Ontario, and the castle he built was meant to demonstrate that status — 40 rooms, servants’ quarters, a working kitchen garden, a coach house, and views across the bay that would have been the most prestigious in Hamilton. The name ‘Dundurn’ comes from a Scottish Gaelic word meaning ‘strong place,’ reflecting MacNab’s Scottish heritage.

The guided tours — running hourly through the afternoon — move through restored rooms that have been furnished and dressed to reflect life in the castle in 1855, the year MacNab was at the height of his influence. The restoration quality is genuinely impressive: wallpapers reproduced from period patterns, furniture appropriate to each room’s function, kitchen equipment displayed in working context, and a below-stairs servants’ section that gives equal attention to the lives of those who maintained the household alongside those who lived in the formal rooms above.

The Great Hall, the Drawing Room, and the Library are the most photographed interior spaces — the scale and decorative quality of these rooms reflect the ambitions MacNab brought to the project. The nursery and children’s rooms give a more intimate view of family life in the Victorian period. The kitchen and servants’ areas below stairs are often the most engaging for visitors who want to understand how a household of this size actually functioned in the mid-19th century.

The grounds are as significant as the interior. A reconstructed kitchen garden produces period-appropriate vegetables and herbs through the growing season. The Hamilton Military Museum sits on the Dundurn grounds and is included with castle admission — its collection covering Canadian military history from the War of 1812 through the 20th century, with particular strength in the period that corresponds to the castle’s own history.

The castle runs special events through the year that extend its programming beyond standard tours. December brings Dundurn’s most popular event — candlelit Victorian Christmas tours that have become one of the most beloved seasonal experiences in Hamilton. Summer brings outdoor programming on the grounds. The Dundurn Heritage Village Harvest Festival in fall is an annual community event.
