There is a sequence to experiencing Niagara Falls properly. You stand at Table Rock and look down at the scale of it. You go behind the rock and hear it from inside the bedrock. And then you get on a boat and go directly toward it at water level, where the full height and power of Horseshoe Falls reveals itself in a way that neither of the other two experiences quite manages.
Niagara City Cruises is Canada’s only falls boat tour — a modern, purpose-built vessel that departs from the dock at 2 Drawbridge Gate, a short walk from Table Rock, and positions passengers as close to the base of Horseshoe Falls as is navigably possible. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes on the water, moving from the calm of the upper river, past the smaller American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls on the US side, and then directly toward the Horseshoe — close enough that the noise becomes overwhelming, the spray reaches the upper deck, and the scale of the falls forces itself on you in a way that photographs genuinely cannot reproduce.
You receive a red poncho before boarding. Use it. The mist is not optional once the boat positions under the falls, and the crowd on the upper deck will be uniformly damp by the time the boat turns back. This is a feature, not a bug — the closest dry viewing experience is Table Rock, which is entirely free. The boat tour exists specifically to get you wet, and the experience is better for it.
The vessels operate from late April through late October, weather and conditions permitting. In the off-season, Niagara City Cruises suspends boat operations — Journey Behind the Falls and other Niagara Parks attractions remain open year-round as alternatives. The summer season runs from early May through Canadian Thanksgiving in October, with multiple departures throughout the day.
Tickets are available online at niagaracruises.com or at the dock. Online pricing is consistently lower than walk-up, and timed reservations help avoid the queue during peak summer afternoons. Families should note that children under three are free, and the experience is genuinely one of the best things to do in Ontario with children of almost any age — the combination of the red ponchos, the mist, and the scale of the falls tends to land well with kids in a way that more passive viewpoints don’t.
The boat tour pairs naturally with Journey Behind the Falls as a morning of Niagara experiences — both are operated by different companies (Niagara City Cruises is separate from Niagara Parks) but physically adjacent, and doing both in the same morning gives you above, behind, and water-level perspectives on the same falls before noon.
For visitors coming from the GTA, the QEW from Mississauga or Toronto delivers you to Niagara Falls in approximately 90 minutes. Parking at the Falls Parking Lot adjacent to Table Rock is walkable to the cruise dock. The WEGO shuttle also connects major Niagara attractions if you’re exploring beyond the immediate falls area.
A word on timing: the boat experience itself is the same regardless of whether you go in the morning or afternoon. The morning has shorter queues and cooler air. The afternoon has stronger light for photography. Either works — but avoid mid-afternoon on a Saturday in August if queue times matter to you.
