The Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada (SHMC) is a nationally significant institution with a Mississauga address that many visitors to the city don’t know exists. Established in 2014 and located in the northeast Malton area of Mississauga near Pearson Airport, the museum is dedicated to preserving, curating, and sharing the cultural, religious, and historical legacy of Sikh Canadians — a community with roots in this country stretching back to the 1890s.
The SHMC’s exhibitions explore the full breadth of that history. Visitors can discover the timeline of Sikh settlement and contribution to Canada, learn about Princess Sophia Duleep Singh — a Sikh suffragette who campaigned alongside the British women’s suffrage movement — and read the remarkable story of Hardit Singh Malik, a Sikh flying ace who served in the Royal Flying Corps alongside future Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson during World War I.
Over the years, the SHMC has mounted exhibitions in 6 provinces, 18 cities, and 3 countries, and has collaborated with over 28 local, national, and international organizations and institutions including the Royal Ontario Museum and the Smithsonian. It has hosted dignitaries including the Premier of Ontario and federal and provincial ministers, as well as scholars, students, and community members from across the country.
The museum operates primarily by appointment on weekdays, with special openings during events like Doors Open Mississauga and Sikh Heritage Month (April). It is a compact but richly documented space — the kind of institution that deepens your understanding of a city whose diversity runs far deeper than most guidebooks acknowledge.
